Am I giving?

Each week, Tuesday Trio serves up three tips to evoke reflection and improve our mental health and wellbeing. Come join us in the conversation.

This week we’re asking, ‘Am I giving?’

  • What does it mean to give?
  • What do I give to others?
  • Do others give to me?

At I Am Here, we want to talk about what it means to give. Do we associate giving with money and material things? Or do we give of our time, our expertise or our friendship? Giving comes in many ways but ultimately it is a selfless act that benefits both the giver and the recipient. In giving, we make connections with other people and we help others to feel supported and cared for. This makes us feel good, which is good for our relationships, our mental health and our wellbeing.

What are we watching this week?

This is a video from Teal Swan, American writer and public speaker, titled ‘Giving and How to Give in Relationships’. Teal compares the giving and receiving in life to the inhale and exhale of breath. She underscores the importance and necessity of both giving and receiving in sustaining satisfactory and enduring relationships.

At I Am Here, we enjoy Teal’s challenge to us, to figure out the why, what and how, when it comes to giving, which she claims is a game changer. What do you think?

What are we reading this week?

This is an article written by Andrew Sobel titled ‘The Power of Authentic Generosity to Strengthen Relationships’. The piece highlights the centrality of generosity to positive connection. ‘If trust is the universal lubricant of relationships, generosity is the fuel.’

We at I Am Here agree that giving enhances every connection, whether that be a personal, social or professional relationship. We acknowledge too that giving is an important part of what makes us human. It is a way to show our love, our respect and our appreciation for others, which makes everyone’s world a better place in which to live.

Who are we quoting this week?

‘Everyone can experience the joy and blessing of generosity; because everyone has something to give.’  – Jan Grace

Giving is a gift that we can all give, regardless of our circumstances. It is a way to make a difference in others’ worlds and to make our own lives richer.
