How Can We Protect Mental Health in Times of Crisis?

This week at I Am Here, ahead of World Mental Health Day, we’re asking:

  • Why is it important to value and protect mental health and wellbeing in every circumstance?
  • ‘During humanitarian emergencies, why is access to support so critical for those who are suffering?
  • What role can we play to support those who are supporting the vulnerable?’

This year’s theme, set by the World Federation for Mental Health, is Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.

Crises such as natural disasters, conflicts, and public health emergencies can leave people traumatised and struggling to cope.

Supporting mental and physical health during these moments does more than ease distress—it saves lives, fosters recovery, and helps people rebuild as individuals and as communities.

That’s why governments, health providers, schools, charities, and communities all have a role to play in ensuring access to care and compassion when it matters most.

What Are We Reading This Week?

We’re reading the World Health Organization’s briefing on Mental Health in Emergencies.

The article highlights evidence-based, community-led interventions that – applied by the UN for example – protect mental health and wellbeing, strengthen resilience, and empower people to recover.

From creating safe community spaces to training local leaders, the article shows how practical action can transform recovery for individuals and communities.

What Are We Sharing This Week?

This week, we’re watching Shane Leahy – EOY 2024 Alumni Recognition Award. In his nomination speech, Shane shares insights into his background and the vital work he does with One4Humanity.

A friend of I Am Here, Shane—who was in Kiev when the Ukranian conflict broke out—set up this registered charity to provide assistance to people affected by armed conflicts and natural disasters.

With a focus on vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the sick, this charity works to ensure that basic needs are met, while offering hope and dignity in times of crisis.

If you’d like to support their mission, you can visit the One4Humanity website.

Who Are We Quoting This Week?

“Do as much as you can,
for as many as you can,
for as long as you can.”

– Shane Leahy

On this World Mental Health Day, let’s recommit to valuing and protecting mental health and wellbeing in every circumstance. Together, we can ensure that support reaches those who need it most, especially in times of crisis.
