Do I Laugh?

This week, we’re asking, “Do I laugh?”

  •      How valuable is laughter and humour?
  •      Do I even have a sense of humor?
  •      Is laughter the best medicine?

At I Am Here, we wanted to explore how laughter contributes to our mental health and wellbeing. Sometimes, life does not seem to allow space for laughter. Maybe it’s down to us to create that space, and make room for laughter? What do you think? What makes you laugh?

What are we laughing at this week?

This week, I Am Here are laughing at a video clip from the BBC’s official Comedy Greats YouTube channel.

The Only Fools and Horses clip has won multiple awards, including Virgin Media’s greatest TV moment of all time. But what makes it so funny?

The answer might be its simplicity. Their particular humour can be understood by any language, any culture, and in any period of time – evidenced by the fact that this aired in 1989 and is still funny 33 years later in 2022.

What are we reading this week?

I Am Here really enjoyed this short article, ‘Stress relief from laughter? It’s no joke,’ by the Mayo Clinic. It explores how beneficial laughter is to our stress management, mental health and wellbeing, both short-term and long-term. It also reminds us of the physical benefits of laughter.

It offers tips to developing and maintaining a sense of humor. We were surprised to read that, according to the Mayo Clinic, humor can be learned.

What are we quoting this week?

“Laughter is like a windshield wiper, it doesn’t stop the rain, but allows us to keep going.”

At I Am Here, we liked the reassurance that this quote lends us.

Laughter might not resolve our challenges, but it can help us summon the courage, confidence, and skills to face those challenges. How do you feel about it?
