Do I always believe what I see?

Each week, Tuesday Trio serves up three tips to evoke reflection and improve our mental health and wellbeing.

This week, we’re asking, ‘Do I always believe what I see?’

  • Do I look beyond a person’s image?
  • Do I look behind the smile?
  • Do I ask the question, ‘Are you really ok?’

At I Am Here, we are exploring the theme of image this week. What does the term image mean? Can a person’s image mean everything and still mean nothing at all? Is it possible for their image to be overlooked entirely because of their physical appearance or how their role in life might appear? Come explore and share your thoughts about image and reality.

What are we watching this week?

At I Am Here, we are watching the mental health and wellbeing video released by UK’s Norwich City Football Club to mark World Mental Health Day. It serves as an important reminder to check in with those around us. The video is a powerful illustration of what we see and don’t see when it comes to mental health and wellbeing, as well as a stark representation of what is said and unsaid. At I Am Here, we feel this short watch communicates excellently the complexities of mental health and wellbeing. It underscores the responsibility we all own to look out for one another, even when the signs are hard to read. We cannot assume that everything is ok just by outward appearances. At I Am Here, we would love for you to share your reaction and thoughts about this piece.

What are we watching this week?

The following talk by American model Cameron Russell is entitled ‘Looks aren’t everything. Believe me, I’m a model.’

At the opening of her talk, I Am Here noted something Russell said:  ‘Image is powerful, but it is also superficial.’ This made us wonder how so much power can have so little meaning. Russell made a personal claim that struck a chord with us. She said she was being fearless in this talk because to be fearless, for her, meant being honest.

Are image and honesty a contradiction? Have a listen and see what you think.

Who are we singing along to this week?

This week, we are singing along to ‘This is Me’ from The Greatest Showman.

It is a well-known song that has been covered by numerous artists over time. However, the words of the song run deep. In the context of this week’s Tuesday Trio, we thought they were relevant. This song explores the theme of appearances and how quickly we can judge each other based on appearances, looks, and image.

Have you been judged by how you look? Have you judged others by how they look? Are appearances important? Is image more important than what’s on the inside?
